Hypermart Pulls Plug on QB Sites
(6/4/2004) Hypermart's free web-hosting service was discontinued. Find out how critical pieces of QB history like Pete's QBasic Site and the QBasic Pathfinder were affected.

Fortunately, Pete's QBasic Site can still be found at http://www.thunderbirdatlatl.com/petesqbsite/.

As the Internet economy continues to tighten, more and more previously free website-hosting services are switching to cost-based services. Consequently this puts more strain on QB gaming and programming sites, whose purposes are usually to inform and entertain, not to conduct big business. Such is the case for Hypermart.net, which discontinued all free site accounts to convert into a 30-day trial format.

Among the QB sites influenced by this change are Pete's QBasic Site and the QBasic Pathfinder. The QBasic Pathfinder in particular, which gave visitors the opportunity to give comments and vote for their favorite QB sites, was deleted entirely. Meanwhile, the original URL for Pete's QBasic Site (formerly petesqbsite.hypermart.net) no longer functions, the popular QB game reviewing site can still be found in it's entirety at http://www.thunderbirdatlatl.com/petesqbsite/.

As of now, the full extent of QB sites affected by this change is still unknown. It should be noted that while Pete's QBasic Site and the QBasic Pathfinder provided an excellent foundation during the early days of the QB community, both the sites and their respective webmasters have moved on to other projects. In the case of QBasic Pathfinder, during it's last eight months of service the top-rated QB site was Master Creating, which hadconverted into a non-QB commercial coding group years ago. Pete's QBasic Site, which logged well over 500 hits per day during it's heyday, last updated in January 2000.
