First Major QBRPG Archive Disappears
(10/11/2001) One of the original QBRPG download sites quietly saunters from the Internet after a complication from NBCi.com.

The QuickBasic RPG archive was the original home of an old QBRPG project, Relics.

The problem with hosting your website on a free service is that sometimes the Internet economy can change, and your site can just disappear with the uptow. Such is the fate of the once popular QBRPG archive hosted by NBCi.com, QuickBasic RPGs.

The massive QBRPG archive featured 96 QBRPGs. QuickBasic RPGs was credited as one of the first QB sites to feature full-length QBRPG game reviews. During it's lifetime, only three QBRPGs were reviewed: Lianne in the Dark Crown, MiniRPG 2, and Relics, an unfinished in-house RPG demo in the style of Dragon Warrior.

QuickBasic RPGs officially "closed" in May 2000, following a letter from QuickBasic RPG webmaster LordQBasic that the site would be kept open as long as it could but would no longer update. At that time, QuickBasic RPGs was hosted by xoom.com.

NBCi.com later acquired the web hosting rights of xoom.com, and in July 2001 NBCi.com discontinued the free webhosting service altogether, causing all sites previously hosted by xoom.com to be cancelled. Hence, probably against the wishes of the webmaster, QuickBasic RPGs also disappeared.

Fortunately, QuickBasic RPGs served as an inspiration for other QB webmasters to make similar RPG archives. In particular, http://www.qbrpgs.com (also known as HyperRealistic Games) is currently the largest QBRPG-exclusive archive site on the Internet, boasting 114 QBRPGs. This latest QBRPG archive passed LordQBasic's RPG archive long since Summer of 2000.
