Pac-Classic v0.2
(Phillip Jay Cohen)
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
"The definitive clone of Pac-man, and it's in QuickBasic!"
Besides Street Fighter
II and Donkey Kong, Pac-man is the only other disputable candidate for
the most popular arcade game of all time. This is probably why they still
update Pac-man's adventures twenty years after his first appearance on
an arcade machine. He's literally everywhere, from Playstations to the
NES and even to the PC.
Finally, this most
popular franchise has been "cloned" for QuickBasic. Claiming to be the
"definitive" clone of the original 1980 Pac-man game, Pac-Classic brings
all of the classic Pac-man franchise to QB! That means non-stop action,
tons of ghost gobbling, even the fruits in the center of the maze. So get
ready, 'cause Pac-man is definitely back!
Graphics (n.)
The use of animation and visual effects to stimulate the senses |
v
(Poor) |
This update to Pac-Classic maintains the
Pac-Man arcade unit look that Pac-Classic v0.1. All the good points of
the original are there, from the blinking power pellets, the movement of
the ghosts, the chomping motions of Pac-Man... even the two-screen playing
field from the Pac-Man arcade unit is present in Pac-Classic v0.2, all
while cleanly placing a 2-player alternating mode. Unfortunately, a big
part of any score in these reviews is the originality of the product. So,
there's an automatic point penalty for looking too close to the
real thing.
And then, Pac-Classic v0.2 gets one point
less than v0.1 because of a minor graphics glitch. When Pac-Man or
the ghosts enter the side passages, the glitch occurs. Otherwise, the game's
graphics are smooth and there really isn't more you can ask out of a definitive
Pac-Man clone. |
Sound/Music (n.)
The smooth blend of atmospheric sounds and original harmonies |
vvv
(Good) |
The sound effects were taken directly
from the original Pac-Man and they were placed into the game effectively.
Thus, a point off for deliberate but understandable lack of originality. |
Gameplay (n.)The precision of control
and involvement of character within its universe |
vvv
(Good) |
Simply put, Pac-Classic plays exactly
like Pac-Man. You play Pac-Man, a guy who likes to eat pellets. But ghosts
wander around the maze and get in your way, and to attack the ghosts you
have to swallow Power Pellets, which give you a temporary boost of ghost-whuppin'
power.
Pac-Classic is able to take all these elements
and put them faithfully into their game. You get a faithful variation of
the ghost AI, the power pellets, the side passages, and speed faithful
to the arcade classic. You even get the two-player mode, the fruit bonuses,
and a high score listing. You really can't get any closer to the arcade's
gameplay than this, so it's the QB standard. |
Story (n.)
The creativity and presentation of the game's critical plot |
(Very
Poor) |
You can't get points for an original story
if it's a direct port of the coin-op. |
Replay Value (n.)
The timelessness of the gamer's delight, such that the experience
can be repeated again and again |
vvv
(Good) |
When Pac-man first came out, I played
it all day, and Pac-Classic is able to renew some of that arcade fervor
I felt from those days of yore. |
Challenge (v.)
To strike the mental nerve in such a way as to stimulate human thought
and reflexes |
vv
(Average) |
According to Phillip Jay Cohen's readme
file, this version of Pac-Classic has a totally re-written Ghost AI system
so that the algorithms are similar to the Pac-Man Arcade. Frankly, I didn't
notice anything wrong with the AI before, nor do I notice anything wrong
with Pac-Classic's new ghost AI. The ghosts are still smart enough but
not annoying enough to keep players into the game. |
Fun Factor (n.)
The overall entertainment value as maintained throughout the adventure |
vvv
(Good) |
Pac-fans rejoice. The graphics, music,
gameplay, and even Fun Factor are very close to the arcade Pac-man. Unless
you're looking for a whole new experience, Pac-Classic's a good addition
to any QB Gamer's library. |
