V Games: Secret Game Revealed

(5/29/2000) Rumors run amok about V Game's secret sports game for the QB Expo is now unveiled. Sneak peek included.

This is not a mock-up... this is the secret engine in action.

For weeks V Planet put their exclusive game partners V Games in a non-disclosure agreement about a secret game that's being tailor-made for the QB Expo. V Games did leak a couple of hints to the QB community about what the secret game could possibly be... first, the secret game was going to use Enhanced Creation's DirectQB technology to make a game in a genre that just hasn't been done by QBasic. Second, the game being designed in a sports game. We've received plenty of good guesses, including talk of a baseball game and a football game. But now, the curtains are being torn down, and V Game's secret project for the QB Expo is revealed.

Enter Bald Man Boxing. That's right, V Games is making a boxing game for QB! And why not? For years, people in the QB community have been making Mario, Zelda, and Final Fantasy clones for QB. Yet, no one has ever paid a QB-game style tribute to the vast number of console boxing games over the years. Boxing games like Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, Evander Holyfield's Real Deal Boxing, and Ready 2 Rumble come to mind. Now it's QuickBasic's turn to put on some gloves.

Here's the story. Twin brothers James and Jim Romero have been rising up the top of the VBLC circuit (VGames Boxing League Championships). Eventually, they clinched the #2 and #3 spots in the circuit. Just as James was ready to fight the #1 champion of the world, reporters uncover a scandal that forces the current champion to relinquish his belt! Now you play Jim Romero against your faster, meaner brother in a boxing match that will determine who among the both of you deserves to be crowned VBLC champion!

Unlike Raven: The Yoyo Commando, which is essentially a blend of Mega Man and Castlevania, V Games is making sure the gameplay in Bald Man Boxing is all its own. V Games is working hard to make sure that Bald Man Boxing has all the punching moves you've come to expect from a boxing game, while not becoming a Punch-Out clone.

"V Games is the first QB coding group to really go deep into a boxing game," says V Games programmer Vance Velez. "So we have to make sure that we set up a precedence for this type of game."

Expect the game Bald Man Boxing to be released at the QB Expo.
